Emily Hall Tremaine - publicity outputs, Emily-style (1939)

The "original It Girl" Emily Hall Tremaine (then Von Romberg) married Adolph B. Spreckels, Jr. in August 1939. See the full-on reporting of the young publicity queen across the United States and beyond. Five months later, she generated publicity wearing a million dollars worth of diamonds to a party. Then seven months after that, a total shocker: Emily sued her dodgy second husband for divorce with allegations that he was pro-Nazi among a pro-Nazi group in America, resulting in rock n’ roll media coverage waves across the United States for months.

This micro-site and webpage are packed with a lot of new information clarifying Emily’s work and life.

In August 1939, social-celebrity Emily Hall Tremaine (previously Emily von Romberg), married sugar heir Adolph B. Spreckels, Jr. in the famous, or by then, notorious Spreckels clan. Shortly thereafter, World War II began in Europe, and the US remained neutral until the Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941.

This was a wickedly dangerous and bizarre time with Nazi German officials, etc., still going in and out of the US, and there was some level of support for Nazi Germany within America. During this time, spying by various persons with access took place.

The announcement of the marriage sometimes was reported on the front pages of American newspapers, and sometimes with an interesting cropped, column-wide photo of Emily. Bizarrely it was from an earlier photo of Emily with Max in 1936 at Aperitif magazine, and just one year earlier, he died in a suspicious plane crash.

Thirteen months later, the marriage between Emily and Adolph B. Spreckels, Jr. erupted into full-on Nazi / anti-Nazi scandal reported in media waves over four months, starting in September 1940.

Pre-Warhol
Unity
&
Variety

See the later "collaboration" of Emily with Andy Warhol. In 1962, Emily advised that Andy— for the famous Marilyn Monroe diptych— put the two panels showing "rise" and "fall" side by side. He agreed, then she bought the artwork which she sold to Tate Modern, London in 1980.

One wonders how much Andy Warhol knew about the late 1930s publicity queen Emily, whose national media coverage included photos and scandal shown in Pittsburgh area media.
